Speaking to biologist Professor Giles Yeo, Michael highlighted the importance of undertaking a health kick for the right reasons. Rather than look to the scales for validation, we should be focusing on how eating better and moving more makes us feel in other ways.
Explaining why weight loss is not an ideal motivator, Michael said: "Frequently people go to the gym on the first of January in order to lose weight, so they go down, they go to the gym, they do loads of exercise.
"At the end of the month they've lost nothing so they give up and that's because they're measuring the wrong thing. They should be looking at the impact on their mental health or on their sleep, but they're not, they're just focusing on that number on the scale, therefore they give up."
"That's exactly right," said Professor Yeo. "I really do think that we need to think less about weight per say, but think more about your health."
The academic went on to say that doing things like monitoring blood pressure levels, blood sugar levels, or even seeing how many flights of stairs you can climb before you go out of breath are better than focusing on scale numbers.
