Doctor Michael Mosley has revealed a cheap daily supplement that could ward off dementia in later life.
Our body requires many different vitamins and minerals to keep it in tip-top shape, and keep it functioning properly throughout our lives. Most people can get all they need through a healthy, balance diet - but sometimes, this isn't always possible, reports the Express.
Due to this, a lot of people rely on daily supplements to keep their bodies fit and healthy. Now, Michael Mosley has said a certain pill taken daily can actually reduce your risk of dementia.
Speaking on his podcast, Just One Thing, the diet guru recommended the pill could also have other health benefits, as well as costing just three pence per day.
In the new episode, Michael discussed the benefits of taking vitamin D each day, saying it can boost your immune system, as well as helping your brain to ward off depression and even dementia.
He said: "I don’t usually recommend supplements, but I do make an exception for this one. It’s vitamin D. It is essential for healthy bones and a properly functioning immune system."
We typically get vitamin D through sunlight, so many people across the UK can end up deprived at this time of year - due to the duller weather.
Dr Mosley said: "Unfortunately, at this time of year in the UK, many of us are deficient in vitamin D, and that’s because it just simply isn’t bright enough out there to generate vitamin D in our skin."
This advice from the expert was backed by a 2023 medical study, published in the journal Alzheimer's and Dementia: Translational Research and Clinical Interventions.
More than 12,000 people took part in the study, which looked at the links between vitamin D levels and Alzheimer's - a form of dementia.
