A major road between Manchester and Sheffield has been closed to certain vehicles due to strong winds. National Highways says the A628 Woodhead Pass is closed in both directions to 'high sided and vulnerable vehicles' this afternoon (March 13).
The closure runs between the A57 at Hollingworth, in Tameside, and the A616 at Flouch, near Stocksbridge. Drivers of all vehicles are being warned to expect delays as a result of the closure.
National Highways says vehicles that are considered vulnerable during strong winds include motorhomes, vans, vehicles towing caravans and motorbikes - as well as buses, HGVs, tippers and transporters. Drivers of these vehicles are being urged to use the M60, M62 and M1 instead to cross the Pennines from Manchester to South Yorkshire.

A post on the National Highways website added: "Road users are also advised to allow extra time for their journey. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
The Met Office is forecasting strong winds with gusts of up to 38mph this afternoon in Crowden, near to Woodhead Reservoir. Speeds are expected to drop to around 30mph by 9pm and down to 26mph by 8am tomorrow morning, before picking up again on Thursday afternoon.
