Mark Labbett has opened up about working on The Chase and revealed that the format of the show was originally different, but TV bosses made a last-minute change. Mark, 58, who is known as The Beast, appears on the ITV game show as a Chaser, alongside Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Jenny Ryan, Paul Sinha and Darragh Ennis. One Chaser appears in each episode with contestants hoping to beat them, but most fail to do so due to the Chasers' incredible general knowledge skills.
The Chase began airing back in 2009 and is one of ITV's most popular shows, but it was actually meant to have a very different format until bosses made a "last-minute change". Mark appeared on GB News to discuss the game show with Nigel Farage on the UKIP founder's show, Talking Pints. "The format was a lucky accident - originally they went up the ladder and then turned round, which was dull as dishwater, but they made a last-minute change, literally," he revealed.
Mark added: We've got an element of 'Jeopardy!', and I know I'm biased but we've got the best game show host in the English-speaking world right now. And then most importantly it's got me of course." Mark said The Chase is the "perfect job" for him and went on to praise his fellow Chasers, who are considered to be some of the smartest people in Britain. He said: "We've become professionals.
We all have got eminence in the world of quizzing, like national championships. I captained Wales and represented them a few times, and Anne's a former world ladies champion. So we've got that level and that's the aim." He went on to add: "It's four against one and we're there to literally provide a test if somebody wins by playing well, I don't like it.
