Police have issued a warning following a spate of burglaries targeting expensive family gold. The thefts, typically carried out in teams of two or three, target homes with the high-value gold jewellery, often bought as wedding gifts in Asian communities and passed down through generations, GMP said.
The force confirmed that the incidents, that have spiked in recent weeks, are being carried out in groups, who break into houses when families have left to attend evening prayers. The thieves are entering through open windows or smashing them with bricks.
One victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, in Rochdale, had his home robbed while on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Terrifying footage from inside his property which showed masked men ransacking his home, clearly looking for something specific.

Speaking to the M.E.N previously, the homeowner said: : "I thought it was live. It was scary, honestly, seeing a stranger walking through the house and going through the drawers. It was horrifying."
The victim told police: "The impact on my family has been immense, my place of safety no longer felt safe. We believe they were looking for gold, they were looking through pillowcases and emptied out our cupboards and drawers. I want people to be more switched on with their home security, leave lights on to give the impression someone is home, it may deter them.”
