A number of Greater Manchester hospitals have issued alerts regarding their A+E departments this evening. Tameside General Hospital, The Royal Bolton Hospital and the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan are all warning that high demand is leading to long waits for many patients.
A message on the website of the trust which runs Tameside says: "Our emergency department is very busy. Please consider if the ED is the best place for your situation."
The Wringhtinton, Wigan, and Leigh Teaching Hospitals Trust says: "Our Emergency Department (A&E) is extremely busy and you may have to wait up to four hours or for longer periods to be seen.

"Patients who are critically ill or injured may be seen before you – even if they arrived after you. If your condition isn’t life-threatening you may be able to get help faster elsewhere (NHS 111, askmyGP, Walk in Centre). "
Whilst the trust that runs the Royal Bolton says their A+E is 'very busy.' "Our Emergency Department is currently experiencing very high levels of activity. Waiting time is approx. 2-4 hours" they say.
That is an improvement on the situation earlier today when it was said to be 'extremely busy' with typical waits of over four hours. However, they say: "No matter how busy our Emergency Department is, the most seriously ill and injured patients will always be seen immediately.
"If you choose to visit us and do not need urgent or emergency treatment, you will be safely supported to access an alternative service."
