Pep Guardiola is not optimistic about Manchester City's chances of replicating their remarkable treble triumph.
Two months on from their crowning glory of winning the Champions League for the first time to complete the treble, City start it all over again on Friday. The Blues will travel to Vincent Kompany's newly promoted Burnley as they get the Premier League season, as well as their title defence, underway.
Speaking on the eve of the new campaign, Guardiola moved to downplay expectations as he expressed his doubt over City being able to scale last season's heights again this year.
"I don't think it will be possible to do what we did last season [the Treble]," the manager said. "We climbed the highest mountain last season but we have come down that mountain now.
"We start the same as everyone else. Our mentality will dictate how the season will be. Every season you start from zero. The history speaks for itself. We need to try and do a performance against Burnley, then Newcastle and then Sheffield United.
"It feels like it finished yesterday but we start again. We start from zero and go game by game. It is not good to think about the title in August and September. We will go day by day and try to get better each day."
It's set to be an even more gruelling campaign for City this time around as they compete against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup next week before taking part in the Club World Cup in December.
