Nathan Ake is relishing added competition from Josko Gvardiol in the defensive ranks as Manchester City strive to build on their historic treble success this season.
Having finally got their hands on the Champions League last season - in addition to defending their Premier League crown and winning an FA Cup trophy - City have wasted little time or spared no expense in the market by snapping up Croatia teammates Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic.
Gvardiol, 21, was signed for €90million from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig as Kovacic, already familiar to these shores, headed to the Etihad Stadium for €30million from Chelsea to address Ilkay Gundogan's departure. Both players will have a crucial role to play moving forward.

Signing highly-rated Gvardiol was particularly noteworthy for City given their existing options in that area; namely John Stones, Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, Aymeric Laporte and Ake himself. However, there could potentially be one departure at centre-back with Laporte widely tipped to move on before the deadline passes.
Either way, though, Ake is welcoming another top-quality addition on and off the field. During an interview for Sky Sports, he said: "I think like everyone else as a player in this team you know the club is going to get the best players possible for every position and that's only a good thing to have competitiveness within the squad.
