Michael Mosley has revealed his morning routine that he "swears by" for effective weight loss. The renowned health expert suggests that going for a walk early in the day can have "life-changing" health benefits.
In his new book, Just One Thing, based on his podcast of the same name, the doctor shares tips on incorporating new daily habits into everyday life and sticking to them. One of his top recommendations is to engage in a brisk walk within two hours of waking up.
This not only helps increase step count and get the blood flowing but also plays a crucial role in regulating appetite, making it particularly beneficial for those on a weight loss journey. Mosley explains that stepping out into the morning daylight can help resist the temptation of snacking.
In Just One Thing, he writes: "As well as waking you up, bright outdoor light helps to reset your body clock, which in turn helps to regulate hunger, mood, body temperature and all sorts of other important bodily processes."
Walking every day not only aids in burning calories but doing so in the bright morning light is also important for maintaining healthy sleep patterns. Mosley adds: "Light levels outdoors are at least 10 times brighter than inside your house, and when this light hits sensors at the back of your eyes, this sends messages to a part of your brain called the pituitary gland, ordering it to stop producing the hormone melatonin.
"Melatonin is known as the 'hormone of darkness' because rising levels in the evening help put you to sleep at night. Studies have shown strong links between poor sleep and weight gain, so maintaining a healthy snoozing schedule is crucial for shedding pounds."
