Kate Garraway has revealed her late husband Derek Draper's final emotional message.
The Good Morning Britain host has opened up about Derek's final year in a new documentary, following his passing in January. Kate Garraway: Derek's Story looks back on the final year of Derek's life, providing personal insight into his personal struggles with illness and highlighting the challenges faced by millions in the UK suffering with serious illness and disability.
The film will also give an "unflinching view" on how Kate and her family cared for Derek - as well as the moments of love and joy they spent together before his death. Kate, 56, has shared the reasons behind creating a third documentary about Derek.
She revealed the dad-of-two had wanted to take part in the programme and was keen to share a message with viewers. When asked why he wanted to take part in this film, Derek previously said: “I want to be heard.” Kate also said she remembers "vividly" that the idea of a third documentary came from her husband. He said he wanted the main message to be “never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love".
Kate admitted: “I hadn’t planned to make another one. At the beginning of January 2023, he’d been released from a four-month spell in hospital for sepsis and we were very positive about his recovery. Derek was determined to keep on getting better and improving.
One day, we were sitting together while I was caring for him and he suddenly, from nowhere, asked, ‘Are we making another documentary?’" Discussions between Kate and Derek then took place, with her husband eager to work on the show.
