This Morning host Kate Garraway has revealed that the last conversation she had with her husband, Derek Draper, before he passed was over the phone in December. Derek passed away on Wednesday 3 January from Covid complications - after he contracted the disease in 2020. In an interview with The Times, Kate explains Derek was receiving treatment in Mexico last year.
He was there at a brain cell clinic where his neural pathways showed “massive” improvement. Kate on her way to visit Derek when she received the devastating call. Prior to that, Kate said she thought things were turning around, she told the publication: “We were in a very different place, health-wise, from the year before — and it felt like the happiest place.” Kate continued to say: “We had more of Derek back.
We always knew his injuries could take him, but it all felt so positive at that point, it was the furthest from my mind that anything could happen.” Sadly, when Kate called the clinic to say she’d landed in Mexico, they told her Derek had died of a cardiac arrest during her flight. In Mexico, Derek then underwent a 14-hour-long operation before being transported to an intensive care unit in a London hospital where according to Kate, “the writing was on the wall”. Kate said that as Christmas and New Year passed: “I had to try and judge at what point the kids should stop saying to him, ‘Come on, Dad, you can make this,’ as they had done for previous crises.” Kate has been incredibly open, along with Derek, about their experience with long Covid in multiple documentaries - one of which will come out this year..
