The Manchester United captain made two assists as Portugal ensured qualification for Euro 2024. Cristiano Ronaldo also bagged a brace to book their place at next summer’s finals in Germany.
Fernandes was one of the brightest sparks throughout the qualifying campaign, scoring four goals and creating seven others as Portugal guaranteed top spot in their group with a 100 percent win percentage. While winning has become a habit at international level, the 29-year-old has endured a poor start to the campaign.

United languish in mid-table, having already lost six games across all competitions - and conceding a staggering 19 goals. Fernandes has done little to squash reservations about Erik ten Hag’s decision to give him the full-time captaincy in June.
Petulancy is an attribute that has regularly been levelled at the midfielder since he arrived from Sporting Lisbon almost four years ago. Speaking earlier this year, United legend Gary Neville insisted frustration at Fernandes’ attitude is commonplace among the fan base.
“I don't talk to any United fan that likes the way Fernandes behaves particularly when the team is losing, when he throws his arms around,” he said. “As a football player, he's been fantastic for United (with) his goals and assists. He says he doesn't cause a problem when he throws his arms around… he does.
“I played with Roy who would hand out the odd rollicking. The last few years there's been players at United tutting which I think is a different type of criticism. It doesn't help
