The Manchester City academy has produced an impressive list of defensive midfielders in recent years, and competition is rife for the next generation coming through this year.
Tommy Doyle won the FA Youth Cup with City, playing seven times for the first team before helping Sheffield United to promotion last season and he is now playing for Wolves in the Premier League. His replacement at City, Romeo Lavia, got two senior appearances before a big-money move to Southampton, and an even bigger-money move to Chelsea this summer. And Lavia's replacement at the City Football Academy Shea Charles became his replacement at St Mary's, moving for up to £15m.
No single player has yet claimed the role of undisputed defensive midfielder for the academy this season, but with injuries to Isaiah Dada-Mascoll and Jacob Wright, Mahamadou Susoho has a golden chance to make that position his own.

City's website describes 18-year-old Susoho as a 'tenacious defensive midfielder', with his eye-catching performance this week in the UEFA Youth League against Leipzig showing off both his defensive and attacking abilities. He began at the base of midfield, but played a key role in turning City's fortunes around from a goal down to winning 2-1 and topping the group with a game to spare - in particular sending a lovely chip into the path of Kane Taylor to equalise.
