Lynne McGarry, the beloved TV mum who appeared on Gogglebox with her late son George Gilbey, is dealing with the heartbreaking loss of her only child. Lynne, who has spent years providing a loving home for troubled children in need, is now mourning the death of George. Lynne and her husband Pete, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 71, opened their family home in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, to nearly 70 foster children over the years.
George always treated their new arrivals like his own siblings, fully supporting his parents' mission to help local kids in need. In a chat back in 2016, Lynne explained why they chose to foster, saying that turning your back isn't an option when you have the space to provide a loving home. "We've now fostered 68 children and it's enhanced our lives so much," she told the Daily Star Sunday eight years ago.
"It's very rewarding. I've just loved doing it. I always say all you need to be a foster parent is a spare room, a sense of humour and a good heart.
I've just brought them up as my own. On Mother's Day I get so many phone calls.
They don't forget you. A lot still regard me and Pete as their parents." "When they've been taken away from their parents and siblings it can be dreadful for them.
It's like a bereavement. It ain't their fault, it's just the situation they're in.
They're often petrified when they first come to us. A lot of kids are bitter about the time they have with social services but ours aren't," reports the Mirror.
Lynne continued: "They say coming to us was the best thing that could have happened to them. But I make them feel welcome and tell them to help themselves if they're hungry and tell them it's their home. We've had some of them get into trouble.
