Tributes have been paid to a 'pillar' of the Manchester music scene who has died suddenly. Rae Donaldson, the manager of Vinyl Exchange record store in the Northern Quarter, passed away on his way to work this morning.
Friends said today (February 16) was his 64th birthday. Influential figures in the city's music community have paid tribute to him following the tragic news, which was confirmed by Vinyl Exchange.
Rae worked at the shop for nearly 30 years, becoming manager, and prior to that had worked at the Eastern Bloc record store. A statement on the Vinyl Exchange's Instagram page read: "We are in complete and total shock here at Vinyl Exchange as we have today lost our long serving and dedicated friend Rae who sadly passed away suddenly on his way to work this morning.

"We are sorry to share the news on here, but it seems the quickest way to let all his friends and regular customers know about this devastating loss. As soon as we have any news regarding a funeral and tributes, we will share them here. R.I.P Rae, you will be greatly missed."
Staff from Piccadilly Records, based just over the road on Oldham Street, said on X: "We are all shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely passing of our friend and fellow music obsessive Rae Donaldson. Our thoughts are with his loved ones, friends and all the @vinylexchange family."
Writer and DJ Dave Haslam said on X: "Tragic that Rae Donaldson has died. Music fans get attached to their favourite record shop staff; I loved him.
"Eastern Bloc & then at Vinyl Exchange for nearly 30 years, so interested, so sussed. I met him mid-1980s when he was a bookseller at Haigh & Hochland. A beautiful soul."
