‘Tár’ director reveals why Oscar-nominated movie might be last of his career

“Tár” director Todd Field says he may never make another feature film — despite rave reviews for the recent Cate Blanchett drama, which he also penned and produced. Field, 59, got candid about the next stage of his career in a recent interview with Cinema Scope, revealing that it’s “highly likely” he’s done with directing. “There’s a real challenge in making a film of any size,” he explained.

Deadline’s Oscar Live Blog

Hello, and welcome to Oscars Sunday on Deadline. Tonight we gather as another lengthy awards season draws to a close, and what a bizarre season it has been. Before the year started, who would’ve thought a pic like A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, a scrappy sci-fi comedy adventure about an Asian-American family, would go from outside underdog to odds-on front-runner? The film debuted last year out at SXSW but has stuck around, charming its way onto screens across the world and picking up top honors from all four major guilds — a sweep only four other films have ever achieved. But can it win Best Picture? That’s perhaps the biggest question still at play this evening.

Will Smith shockingly smacked Chris Rock onstage at the Academy Awards after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, the comedian reignited the feud with his Netflix stand-up special “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” last Saturday.“Will is embarrassed and hurt by what Chris said about him and his family in his Netflix special,” a Smith source told “Entertainment Tonight.”Embarrassed or not, last year’s Best Actor winner received a 10-year ban from the Oscars and other associated Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events, so he cannot present the trophy for Best Actor in 2023 as tradition dictates. And a source told Page Six the violent dust-up won’t go unmentioned Sunday night.“We’re going to acknowledge it, and then we’re gonna move on,” executive producer Molly McNearney said in a press conference.

Acting Up: Secrets of the ‘Turning Red’ Boy Band, Austin Butler in Stitches and Cate Blanchett and that ‘Tár’ Accent Mark

Jenelle Riley Deputy Awards and Features Editor This article first appeared as part of Jenelle Riley’s Acting Up newsletter – to subscribe for early content and weekly updates on all things acting, visit the Acting Up signup page. Sometimes due to article lengths or just time, there are some fun tales from interviews and Q&As that don’t make their way into stories. So I’ve decided to include a round-up here. Enjoy! The Accent in “Tár” Has Surprising Origins If you’re not already aware, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation is a non-profit org that provides several resources and emergency assistance to SAG-AFTRA artists. It also hosts fantastic Q&As that really dive deep into the acting process and for the recent SAG Awards, organizers hosted several panels with contenders in different categories. I was honored to moderate a few, including one for the lead female actor in a film with nominees Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once).”

Cate Blanchett Talks ‘Tár’ and Fulfilling the Awards Prophecy of Winning an Oscar Every Nine Years

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Will Cate Blanchett fulfill the awards prophecy of winning an Academy Award every nine years? The two-time Academy Award winner of “The Aviator” (2004) and “Blue Jasmine” (2003) is a favorite to possibly win her third for Todd Field’s psychological drama “Tár,” in which she plays a lesbian conductor who begins to lose her grip on power and reality. On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sit down with Blanchett to discuss her work stunning transformation into Lydia Tár. In addition, she talks about working with co-star Nina Hoss and more. Listen below: From Focus Features, “Tár” is set to a rhythmic beat of classical orchestration, marking writer and director Todd Field’s return to the director’s chair, 16 years after “Little Children” (2006) and 21 years after his debut “In the Bedroom” (2001).

‘Tár’ Editor Reveals Deleted Line That Nods to the Film’s Ending

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor SPOILER ALERT: This story contains major spoilers for “Tár.” Todd Field’s “Tár” ends with disgraced conductor Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) conducting the score of “Monster Hunter,” a fantasy video game series, for a group of cosplayers in Southeast Asia. It’s a huge fall from grace from her previous post as head of the Berlin Philharmonic. Countless theories exist on the internet about the character’s ending. Is she hallucinating? Is Tár herself a monster who has been hunted, as her downfall comes as a result of allegations of misconduct and abuse of power. Or is it something else?

How Well Does Brendan Fraser Know His Love Interests? Oscar Nominee Guesses Co-Stars’ Lines From ‘The Whale,’ ‘Blast From the Past’ and More

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Brendan Fraser’s massive popularity has revitalized the 54-year-old actor’s career. It has brought him to his first-ever Oscar nomination for best actor for his towering performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale.” For this week’s video episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sat down with Brendan Fraser to discuss the “The Brenaissance” and what the past year has meant to him. We also played a game called “Who’s Babe Is It Anyway?” — where Fraser guesses which of his former co-stars said a particular line. How well do you think he did? Watch the full video above. The podcast, with added guest Cate Blanchett, the Oscar-nominated actress of “Tár,” will be released on Friday.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” could continue its momentum and win in several film categories, including Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Ke Huy Quan) and Outstanding Performance by a Cast. The multiverse-hopping indie directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert enters the evening with the wind at its back, having taken home the top prize on Saturday at the Producers Guild Awards, indicating that the zany film is not polarizing voters as much as some feared.
