After all the indulgence of Christmas Day, going for a walk on Boxing Day is a much-welcomed tradition which blows the cobwebs away. Plus it helps you work up an appetite for all those leftovers.
Whether it’s a walk in the woods or a hike up a hill, you can’t beat a stroll in the fresh air on a crisp winter’s day. It’s also a great way to diffuse any tension if things are getting heated over the Monopoly board this Christmas.
Luckily we have plenty of walks to choose from right here in Greater Manchester, and a few more which are further afield. So gather the family together, wrap up warm and maybe shove a few Christmas chocolates in your pockets to munch on along the way, and take your pick from one of the walks below.

If you’re looking for a Boxing Day walk with incredible views, then Pendle Hill is the place to go. The summit stands at 1,827ft above sea level and, on a clear day, you can even see as far as Blackpool Tower from the summit, as well as the Yorkshire Three Peaks.
There’s a five mile circular walk you can take from the village of Barley, up to the summit and back again. Along the way it passes the Ogden Reservoirs, takes you through grassy fields then up onto the moorland.
Starting in Hadfield, Glossop, the Longdendale Trail takes you through the picturesque moorland landscape with gorgeous reservoir views. The 6.5 mile route follows the Trans-Pennine railway route which closed in 1981 and finishes as the entrance to the Woodhead Tunnel.
The trail is pretty flat
