Safety hazards have been identified in most homes inspected by Manchester council in the latest crackdown on landlords. The most serious hazards - including fire safety issues and excessive cold - were found in around one in 10 of the properties that were inspected.
Legal action has been taken against landlords who have not acted appropriately and fines worth more than £70,000 have been handed out. The council claim the clampdown on safety standards has led to a reduction in housing-related issues in certain areas.
It comes as the council plans to extends landlord licensing to nine new areas in the city next year in the fourth phase of the scheme. Selective licensing requires all landlords of private rented properties in certain areas to pay for a licence and be subject to inspections.

The aim is to tackle poor quality homes and management standards. Licensing can be introduced if an area is experiencing significant and persistent problems caused by anti-social behaviour, poor property conditions and high levels of migration, deprivation and crime.
There are currently eight areas across Manchester where the scheme is running. A further four have already been completed.
Earlier this month, Manchester council published a report on the latest selective licensing schemes in Moss Side and Rusholme, Old Moat and Moston. Across the these three areas, landlords of 1,515 properties were granted licences and 500 inspections took place.
