Inspectors have praised how effectively Manchester council, GMP, schools and the NHS work together to protect young people from serious violence and criminal exploitation. The inspection by Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services and His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation was carried out over five days in October.
The results of the inspection, which were published last week, follow figures which reveal that knife crime has fallen by 16 per cent in Greater Manchester despite rising across England and Wales. Responding to the latest figures, which show that the city-region still has one of the highest levels of knife crime in the country, mayor Andy Burnham said there is still more work to do be done to tackle it.
A new report on the inspection of Manchester's local safeguarding partnership describes the work of the organisations involved as 'coordinated' and 'comprehensive'. The report identifies an 'increasingly strong focus' on prevention and early intervention to tackle serious youth violence and a highlights a 'significant number' of 'innovative interventions and projects' making a positive difference.

In particular, the Youth Zone in the north of the city which works with a 'broad range of children' was praised for its part in building intelligence to identify potential incidents such as planned fights and preventing young people getting involved in county line gangs. However, despite describing the service as 'flexible', inspectors noted a 'recognised gap' with no youth outreach
