You could be forgiven for absolutely seething with rage after hearing about Greater Manchester’s so-called ‘punishment beating’ from the Government during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Andy Burnham claims that Boris Johnson’s government not only knew Tier 3 restrictions wouldn’t work, but also imposed stricter regulations as punishment for the mayor's very public rebellion back in October 2020.
It was then that - after days of negotiations with the government - the mayor stood outside Central Library, side-by-side with then deputy mayor Bev Hughes and then council leader Sir Richard Leese for a press conference. At the time he claimed Greater Manchester was being treated as the 'canary in the coal mine' as part of an 'experimental regional lockdown strategy'.
Then, just a few days later he stood again with gathered press - this time outside the Bridgewater Hall - after telling the government the region would not accept any more Covid restrictions.
Mr Burnham insisted Greater Manchester had simply not been offered enough money to help the poorest people through the winter during much tougher Tier 3 restrictions. He accused the government of ‘playing poker with people’s lives’ following days of fraught negotiations between the region’s leaders and ministers and explained they had ended when senior ministers ‘walked away’.

Plans to move the English National Opera (ENO) to the North of England have been warmly welcomed in Greater Manchester which will become the 'main home' for the cultural institution. But the news, which was announced on Tuesday (December 5), was met with some strange responses from the rest of the country on social media - including from some angry Londoners.
