Storm Babet is set to hit Greater Manchester today, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to our region.
A Met Office yellow weather warning covering parts of our region will come into force at 6pm this evening, though forecasters predict the heavy showers will begin from around 10am. Following a cloudy and largely dry afternoon, more heavy rain is then forecast to fall in Greater Manchester tonight and into the early hours.
Further downpours are forecast through the day on Friday, with the 36-hour yellow warning remaining in place until 6am on Saturday. In other parts of the UK, a rare red weather warning has been issued where 'exceptional rainfall and impactful wind' could cause a 'danger to life'.

In some parts of eastern Scotland, forecasters believe some areas could be 'cut off for days' with flooding and power cuts expected as the storm hits. There is a 'danger to life from from fast-flowing or deep floodwater' in Aberdeenshire and Angus.
The red warning covering parts of Scotland, which is the first issued in the UK since Storm Dennis in February 2020, comes into force at 6pm today and will last until 12pm tomorrow. Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: “We’re going to see prolonged heavy rain, where we could see 200 to 250 millimetres of rain falling within a day which is well over a month’s worth of rainfall for eastern parts of Scotland.
