Paul Merson has told Sir Jim Ratcliffe that Manchester United are "a million miles away" from competing for elite honours after the club's home defeat to Fulham.
Investment from INEOS owner Ratcliffe was formalised on Christmas Eve and ratified by the Premier League earlier in February, with the British billionaire stepping into the boardroom. While that £1.25billion deal was being rubber-stamped behind the scenes, United enjoyed an upturn on the pitch, winning four straight matches to revive their Champions League qualification hopes.
Ratcliffe faced the media once the deal went through and made the bold claim that he wanted to knock Liverpool and Manchester City "... off their perch", but a last-gasp winner for Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon has soured United's top-four ambitions. It was a game that, according to Merson, highlights the gulf in class between United and teams currently fighting at the Premier League summit.

Merson analysed the Fulham game for Sky Sports show Soccer Saturday and the Arsenal footballer-turned-pundit did not hold back in his verdict: "Man United were shocking and I'm not exaggerating. Absolutely shocking. How they think they can get in the top four... What's the point in getting in the top four anyway?
"They're not going to win the Champions League, so what's the point in them being in it? They [Fulham] grew into the game and it was comfortable for them. They absolutely dominated the first half and they thoroughly deserved to win. It wasn't a smash and grab. Far from it."
Merson, 55, added: "I can't explain how bad Man United were. It was so, so bad.
