Police find packages on motorway after car chase ends in drama at Manchester Airport

A dramatic police chase ended in an arrest after police discovered packages of heroin had been dumped near Manchester Airport.
A white Mercedes Sprinter van first caught the attention of Cheshire Police on the M56 near Warrington at about 5.30pm on Tuesday and officers began a pursuit. The driver failed to stop sparking a high-speed chase.
The chase heated up as Greater Manchester Police joined in and a police helicopter followed from above. The van driver left the M56 and headed towards Manchester Airport on the A555.
According to the police, several packages found to be containing heroin were thrown out of the van during the chase. The pursuit came to an end when the van crashed through a barrier into a multi-storey car park at the airport.
The driver attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended near the Radisson Blu hotel. The police later discovered the discarded packages, believed to be full of heroin, on the M56, reports the Manchester Evening News.
A 42 year old man from Manchester was arrested at the scene. He is being held on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs, involvement in the supply of class A drugs, and failing to stop for officers.
He remains in custody for questioning by detectives.
Chief Inspector John Forshaw, of the Cheshire Police Road and Crime unit, stated: "This is another fantastic result which has led to the removal of a large quantity of illegal drugs from the streets of Cheshire, and I would like to thank our colleagues at GMP for the support they provided. While this investigation is in the early stages, I hope that these arrests provide reassurance for residents in the area and the wider community."
