Manchester Airport has announced the launch of a direct route to Shanghai, the first service to operate to the Chinese city from the north. Juneyao Air has chosen Manchester as its first destination in the UK in a move that’s been hailed as “fantastic news” by regional leaders.
The new service to China’s ‘financial capital’ will be a boost for business and tourism alike, both here in Manchester and in Shanghai. The route also serves as an important transport link for the thousands of Chinese students at universities here in Greater Manchester and across the north.
News of the route was revealed earlier this month by Chinese media, but now it has been officially confirmed by Manchester Airport. The service builds on Manchester’s status as the only English airport outside of London with a direct service to China’s mainland. Currently Hainan Airlines operates four weekly flights between Manchester and Berlin, increasing to daily flights in the summer.

Shanghai flights with Juneyao Air will begin on July 1 and will run three times per week, on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays. They will operate on a Boeing 747 Dreamliner aircraft with business and economy options.
Shanghai is China’s biggest city and its financial hub, with around 185,000 people from across the North already travelling there indirectly each year. Located on the country’s east coast, it’s often dubbed the ‘New York of China’ and it’s also home to the second biggest Disney theme park in the world.
