Keeping fit and healthy is important throughout life but it can become increasingly difficult as we age.
However, there may be one simple exercise that could help keep you young, with the activity explained by Dr Michael Mosley. The nutrition expert is the creator of diet plans such as the 5:2 and Fast 800, with his advice helping many trim down and improve their overall health.
And now the expert is suggesting giving cycling a go in a bid to stay young after discovering a recent study on the topic. Doctor Mosley explained in his Daily Mail column how he has been looking at the latest science on how to keep the body and the brain youthful in research for a new radio show.
During his research, Dr Mosley noticed a study published in the Journal of Physiology earlier this year. The study included participants from the age of 18 to 56 who completed short bursts of high-intensity training on a bike.
During the intense exercise, it was found that levels of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was boosted by 300 per cent. In contrast, that protein jumped by just 16 per cent when volunteers did 90 minutes of low intensity cycling.
BDNF is great for maintaining health, with the protein acting like a "fertiliser for the brain", Mosley explained. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor helped maintain the health of existing brain cells as well as encouraging the growth of new ones.
Doing this type of HIIT activity a few times per week could even delay the onset of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's, according to the researchers.
Exercise of this sort can also help recharge the mitochondria - the powerhouse of cells that provide energy from our body.
