Sir Jim Ratcliffe might face disappointment in the transfer market with rivals Manchester City tipped to beat them to their top summer target. Sir Jim has already discussed his key targets with senior figures at Old Trafford, ahead of an expected summer transfer splurge.
A key target already identified is Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, who is one of the rising stars in English football. United appear desperate to add at least one centre-half to their squad this summer.
However, it seems that Ratcliffe might experience his first transfer setback with United as City are planning to make a move for the 21-year-old defender. The Mail reported that City are interested in Branthwaite because he's young, homegrown and shows traits similar to John Stones, who also moved from Everton to City in 2016.
Everton's asking price of £70million for Branthwaite might be too high for United, especially if his value increases after being included in England's Euro 2024 squad.
United plan to sell several players this summer to fund their squad revamp. The club's bosses were confident that Branthwaite would not refuse an offer from Old Trafford, but the interest from the Treble winners could be a big blow.
Branthwaite has played six times for England's U21s. He got his first call-up to the senior Three Lions squad earlier this month and was on the bench but didn't play in the team's 1-0 loss to Brazil on Saturday. However, he could figure tonight against Belgium, alongside Stones, with Harry Maguire ruled out.
And Maguire could find himself replaced long-term in both the England and Manchester United side if Branthwaite continues his progress. City, however, are reported to be interested in seeing how the Cumbrian-born stopper pairs with
