Her bloodied body was found face down in mud, having been stabbed 28 times in the head, neck, back and chest, jurors have previously heard. On the eighth day of the trial, forensic scientist Jane Roughley gave evidence.
She said she had examined a 'hunting knife' discovered in Boy Y's bedroom when he was arrested. Ms Roughley said it contained 'heavy contact blood staining' and 'possible fatty tissue' around the 'hilt area' of the knife.
A profile was found which matched the DNA of Brianna, jurors heard. The court also heard that a profile matching the DNA of Boy Y was found on the handle.
Some blood was also found on the knife's 'sheath', the jury was told. A mixed DNA profile was discovered from it, containing Boy Y's DNA and Brianna's DNA, the court heard.
Asked about her findings, Ms Roughley said: "One explanation was that Boy Y had used this knife to injure Brianna Ghey, and then subsequently cleaned it, leaving behind blood staining in areas not easily accessible."
