Kieran McKenna admits Brandon Williams 'wasn't the most talented' coming through the ranks at Manchester United but rose to the first-team through hard work.
Williams reunited with McKenna earlier this week after agreeing to join Ipswich Town on loan for the season. The pair had worked together within the Reds academy, before the former left to take a role in management.
Having played just once under Erik ten Hag last season, the 22-year-old was long tipped to leave Old Trafford in search of more minutes. The left-back was part of a bumper crop of young talent who came through the academy under McKenna and went on to make 51 appearances for the first-team, despite his new manager saying he wasn't top of the class coming through the ranks.
“I think Brandon has said this on record himself, he certainly wasn't the most talented or anywhere near the most talented player in his group at 15-16," McKenna said. “He was in a very good age group with James Garner and Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong, came into that age group, Ethan Laird, who's done very well.

"I saw how hard he fought and worked to get to where he got to. He's a player with real hunger, shows real desire and commitment on the pitch, and shows desire and commitment every day in training when he's at his best.
“And I saw him work his way through that to end up playing Premier League and European football for Man United. So he's a great example of where that hard work and that commitment can take you.”
