Manchester United never expected to need a left-back this summer but circumstances beyond their control have them scrambling for a late addition.
News of Luke Shaw's injury came as a huge blow for United after their 2-0 defeat at Tottenham earlier this month. Confirmation of a muscular issue initially suggested the 28-year-old would be out for 'a number of weeks', although there are fears it could be closer to two months.
Tyrell Malacia is yet to feature this season due to injury, while Alvaro Fernandez could follow Brandon Williams and leave on loan. As such, United have entered the market for a short-term fix and are weighing up several loan options.
Among those is Marcos Alonso, who is currently at Barcelona after joining them on a free last summer. The 32-year-old has Premier League and European experience, having spent six years at Chelsea before his move to the Nou Camp.

How receptive Barcelona are to a loan offer remains to be seen, but Xavi's side may become more open to a move once they welcome Joao Cancelo to Catalonia. The Manchester City man looks set to begin a second loan spell away from the Etihad, having joined Bayern Munich in January.
While primarily a right-back, Cancelo has played more than his fair share of games as a left-sided defender and can operate comfortably in both roles. Under Pep Guardiola at City, he mastered the inverted role that saw him drift into central midfield.
