Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was attempting to set Marcus Rashford up for a long-range effort in what turned out to be a brilliant move for Casemiro's goal against Nottingham Forest.
United fought back from 2-0 down to beat Steve Cooper's side 3-2 at Old Trafford and secure their second home win of the season. Taiwo Awoniyi and Willy Boly landed early punches with two goals inside four minutes to silence the home crowd.
Christian Eriksen pulled one back and as United continued to push forward Casemiro levelled the game on 52 minutes. The Brazilian was on hand to net from close range after what looked like a training ground routine.
Fernandes floated a free-kick out to Rashford on the edge of the Forest box, with the Reds forward taking a touch and floating a perfect pass back over. The Portugal international was in plenty of space and had the vision to knock the ball down to Casemiro who applied the finishing touch to the move.
RATINGS: Fernandes and Eriksen good in win vs Forest
“I saw that Marcus had a lot of space outside the box and tried to give him the pass so he had time to shoot,” Fernandes told MUTV when asked about the set-piece. “But my pass was a little bit high so he had to control the ball and couldn't get it right because the ball was not easy.
“After that he did a great touch and the cross from Rashy is what made the goal. The ball from him was amazing, the right timing with the right pace, for me it was about getting it into the goal or understanding if someone was in a better position.
“Casemiro was in a better position than me, could see all the goal and obviously the ‘keeper was running towards me. Case had the time to control and score and that's what was most important for us.”
