Undoubtedly one of the most high-profile weddings, and relationships, in British history, King Charles, at the time Prince, said 'I do' to the late Lady Diana Spencer on Wednesday 29 July 1981. And one man who was there to capture it all was Thomas Patrick John Anson, who was known throughout his professional career as Patrick Lichfield, or just Lichfield.
As one of only a few photographers invited, he combined formal portraits of the happy couple with candid shots of Diana carrying her youngest bridesmaid Clementine Hambro through Buckingham Palace and Queen Elizabeth watching coverage of the wedding on a small TV. For such a big event, Litchfield was far from unprepared, and knew how to keep a group of royals in tact.
“He was well-practised at being around the royals and came armed with a whistle so he could keep the wedding party in line,” revealed bridesmaid India Hicks. Battling the other photographers who had the opportunity to capture the day, he had some gameplay up his sleeve too.
Lichfield reportedly outmanoeuvred other photographers by clicking his tongue, successfully emulating the sound of a camera shutter closing.
This is said to have led his rivals to start snapping wildly until they had used up all their camera film, leaving him free to capture his famous shot of the bridal party collapsing in giggles at the end of the shoot.

married Prince Harry in May 2018.Photographer Samir Hussein believes that the former actress, 42, was more palpable as opposed to other members of the Firm.Hussein has often shot snaps of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, most famously the rain-drenched photo of the couple happily walking arm-in-arm under an umbrella at the Endeavour Awards in 2020.The photo was from one of their last royal engagements before they officially stepped down as senior members of the Firm later that same year. The artist described taking that photo of Markle and Harry, 39, as being astonishingly different than his usual experiences of snapping the royals.“It was very noticeable when Meghan came on the scene just how tactile she was, like holding the Duke’s hand and being arm-in-arm, so that was quite unusual,” Hussein told The Telegraph recently. The photo will be on display in a new exhibition titled “Princess Diana: Accredited Access” at Dockside Vaults in London beginning May 25. The event will showcase both Hussein and his father Anwar’s photographs that chronicled the monarchy over the decades. When the Invictus Games founder and the “Suits” alum saw the smiling image of themselves, they were over the moon.
The Prince and Princess of Wales spent many years living at Kensington Palace before relocating to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor - although they still use it as their official office. The family of five lived in Apartment 1A of Kensington Palace and were said to have decided on the move to give their young children more freedom. The idea that the West London palace is restrictive for younger members of the Royal Family is not a new concept as it was famously the site of a restrictive set of rules which affected Queen Victoria before her accession at the age of 18. The Wales family's home at Adelaide Cottage is nestled away in the heart of the Crown Estate's private 655-acre royal park and will provide the three young royals with a greater deal of privacy than they had at Kensington Palace.

But it is clear that it is not just royals of the past who have handed down their looks - but living relatives too.

The UK is central to the heritage of my children,” Harry last year told the court in a written statement read out by his lawyers.
