Erik ten Hag felt Manchester United's slow start against Fulham had an adverse effect on Omari Forson's performance.
Forson, 19, was a surprise starter on only his third appearance for the club but he was substituted for Christian Eriksen in the 53rd minute.
Ten Hag preferred Forson over the £86.3million winger Antony and Amad in his 13th different frontline this season but the Londoner is unlikely to retain his place for the FA Cup fifth round away to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.
"I won't focus and I wouldn't say that," Ten Hag replied to the suggestion it was too soon for Forson. "I think he had some good actions, it was a reasonable performance.
"It's never easy, especially when it's a slow start, but there were some good actions, he was reliable in his job, so I wouldn't say so."
Fulham were worthy winners in their first victory at Old Trafford since October 2003 but Ten Hag repeatedly claimed United "should've won".

Despite a goalless first half, Ten Hag highlighted United's handful of opportunities. "I think Garna (Alejandro Garnacho), when we beat the goalkeeper by getting the ball from the line, we beat him with the ball on the post from Diogo.
"We had chances before half-time. They had chances as well. Iwobi. We create our chances. I have seen a brilliant chance but unfortunately, Bruno and Rashford stopped on each other from a great pass by Casemiro, that was probably our best chance before half-time.
"We had our chances, we beat (Bernd) Leno but he was lucky by having a player on the goal line."
