An ex-Manchester United youth player accused of rape was 'given advice' on consent and 'respecting women' through his former club, a jury has heard.
John Cofie, who played for the club between the ages of 14 and 21, denies raping a woman with his friend Nathan Stuart after a night out in April 2019. Giving evidence at Minshull Street Crown Court on Wednesday (February 21), he said the next day he had been 'worried' for himself and Mr Stuart after the alleged victim claimed not to remember sexual intercourse the night before, but did not accept the woman was unable to consent at the time.
Jurors were previously told how on the evening of April 12 she went out with a friend in Altrincham, Trafford, and met Mr Cofie and Mr Stuart. She was said to have known Mr Stuart 'for many, many years'.

The court heard how the women sat with the defendants for a time in the Conservative Club before moving on to the Green Room at Goose Green in Altrincham, where the group had more drinks. Jurors previously heard how going for a cigarette outside the Green Room was 'the last [the alleged victim] really recalls of the evening'.
Mr Cofie and Mr Stuart then went to the Tiki Bar nearby, where the alleged victim later rejoined them, jurors were told. Giving evidence, Mr Cofie said he did not see the woman's friend with her inside the Tiki Bar, but that she was 'dancing' and 'trying to kiss' Mr Stuart.
He told the court Mr Stuart had been 'uncomfortable' with this, and added he had told Mr Stuart to 'not kiss her back' and 'just leave it'.
