A dopey drink driver who crashed head-on into a wall told cops a “cock and bull story” about his van being stolen by thieves.
Stuart Sanderson was nearly five times the alcohol limit when he careered out of control in Edinburgh on March 22 last year.
The 57-year-old phoned police to claim he’d been targeted by thieves but drew suspicion when he gave his postcode instead
of the van’s registration plate number.
Officers went to his home and found him intoxicated but he maintained two men made off in his Renault Trafic. Sanderson’s explanation further unravelled when he was unable to explain how he was able to chase the car on foot and witness the smash.
Sheriff Robert Fyfe told the plumber he’d told a “cock and bull story” which wasted police time. Officers recovered CCTV which showed Sanderson was behind the wheel when the van collided with the wall.
Sanderson appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Friday and admitted drink driving and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Prosecutor Eilidh Grant said Sanderson had driven off from a BP garage on Ferry Road before going along Coburg Street in Leith.
Ms Grant said: “The vehicle collided head-on into a wall. (Sanderson) then exited the vehicle’s driver side and checked the damage before walking off down Coburg Street.”
Sanderson pled guilty to driving with 305 milligrammes of alcohol in 100ml of urine when the legal limit is 67mg. He was banned from driving for 21 months and fined £850.
