A strikingly-designed £140m bright blue office block WILL be built in the city centre, it has been confirmed.
The block — called Colloco after the Latin for ‘gathering’ — will be built on the former site of The Manchester College on New Quay Street. The college left the site, built in 2000 near the border with Salford, to a new home near Strangeways in 2022.
Developers HBD said the plans will ‘combine high end commercial workspace with wellness focused amenity facilities’ and ‘create a new benchmark for office developments within Manchester city centre’ as the St John’s part of town changes. In recent years, it has gone from being an unloved corner of the city sandwiched between Spinningfields and the Irwell to the home of Aviva Studios and Enterprise City — a business hub.

The scheme, thought to cost £140 million, has now been given the green light by Manchester City Council’s planning department, it’s been confirmed today (Thursday, March 7). The 200,000 sq ft, 16-storey project will feature the blue glazed bricks on its exterior as promised in its initial designs.
It will also have green credentials, according to Place North West. HBD chief executive Adam Brady said: “Colloco will be one of the most sustainable new office buildings in the regional market at a time when high-profile businesses are looking to occupy space which will support their net zero carbon commitment.
“The building looks to attract dynamic, forward-thinking organisations, which see collaboration and the health and wellbeing of their employees as fundamental to the success of their business.”
