It was a culture shock for a 16-year-old Jovan Kirovski when he swapped the sunshine and the beaches of California for a bedroom in Swinton, but as one of America's brightest talents at the time, he knew Manchester was too good to turn down if he was to make it.
Kirovski, the son of Macedonian immigrants, earned a chance at Old Trafford after impressing in the Milk Cup in 1992, scoring seven goals in seven games while playing for Glasow Rangers. The goal-den touch would remain while at United, but while four Americans have played for United, Kirovski never added his name to that list.
He spent four years at the club, playing for the reserves and sometimes training with the first team, but while United offered him a four-year contract at 20 to stay at the club, the Home Office refused him a work permit, despite an endorsement from the Professional Footballers' Association.
So in 1996 his time at United came to an end, he moved to Borussia Dortmund and won the Champions League in his first season, the first American footballer to win the most prestigious club competition in Europe. He would win 62 caps for the United States and eventually return to English football to play for Crystal Palace and Birmingham, before returning home to end his career in the MLS. He is now technical director at the LA Galaxy, but the story of his time at Old Trafford is one of what could have been.
