Ben Shephard has shared an awkward story from 20 years ago about a mix-up with his friend and co-host Kate Garraway. Ben bid farewell to Good Morning Britain today and will start hosting This Morning with Cat Deeley.
Ben and Kate have been friends for a long time, even living close to each other once. But something embarrassing happened that Ben kept secret for over 20 years because he felt so awkward about it.
Ben, 49, would often visit Kate, 56, at her home for a chat and a cup of tea. One day, something really embarrassing happened when he went to see her for lunch. Ben told the story on GMB in 2019, saying: "I'd invited myself over for a cup of tea like I often did as she wasn't usually keen as she had to tidy up."
According to The Mirror, he was into cycling then and was locking his bike outside Kate's house. Her kitchen was in the basement, so he could see inside from where he was. Then he saw someone without any clothes on in the kitchen and it was Kate!
"Kate had obviously gone home and had a sleep. Suddenly someone nude walked into the kitchen and I looked up and it was Kate. And she was topless," shared the blushing host. "I kind of stopped. I was transfixed."
He stared in shock, rooted to the spot, too scared to move in case she spotted him. Rather than face the awkwardness, Ben quietly unlocked his bicycle and rode off in a fluster.
"I sort of froze, panicked... walked away really embarrassed," he revealed to the Sunday Mirror last year. "It became a thing in my head... I couldn't tell her." When perplexed Kate asked why he hadn't visited, a sheepish Ben explained that he had "just got a bit tied up".
Ben kept this secret for almost 20 years until he inadvertently spilled the beans. He confessed all to Chris Moyles
