The popular BBC show Antiques Roadshow has been a hit since it first aired in 1979, with fans tuning in each week to see the valuations of various items brought in by guests. Over the years, there have been many memorable moments, and in one episode BBC expert Eric Knowles found himself captivated by a guest's extraordinary teaspoon set. Clearly enamoured even before opening the box, Eric's anticipation was palpable as he began to reveal the treasure within.
"I'm not going to pretend because I know what is in this box," the expert confessed with a smile. "And when I open it to reveal it, it's treasure. Surveying the array of tea-related items inside, Eric quipped, “When I look at something like this, tea strainer, sugar tongs, spoons, I have to ask you, are you a serious tea drinker?" "I drink Earl Grey," the guest replied as she joked.
"Because I am a posh Brummie." "You're a posh Brummie?" Eric chuckled before diving into the story behind how the set came to be in the guest's possession.
The guest revealed she had purchased it for £250, prompting Eric's impressed response: "You did really well. "I think if I was asked to buy these today, I would ask £800, possibly £1,000. It depends where you are doing your buying and where you are doing your selling.
The important thing is you were doing your buying and selling at the right time." As they examined the intricate details further, the guest confessed: “I don't know much about it to be honest apart from the name." Pointing to the signature, Eric revealed, "Liberty & Co Ltd Regent Street, London." Clearly impressed, the guest explained she had acquired the set from an auction house based on its beauty and prestigious name.
