Television producer and director Nicky Illis, who worked on Antiques Roadshow and was the long-term director of Fake or Fortune, has sadly died of cancer aged 53. Nicky, who also worked on Alan Carr's Adventures with Agatha Christie in 2022, first came into the industry back in the 1990s and went on to produce shows such as One Foot in the Past as well as The House Detectives. She is survived by her husband Seb, whom she married in 2012, and their two children.
Seb is also a producer and has worked on nature documentaries for channels such as ITV and Roku. At the beginning of this year, Nicky directed a new episode of Fake Or Fortune? with presenters Philip Mould and Fiona Bruce. Paying tribute to her friend and colleague, BBC journalist Fiona dubbed Nicky "simply irreplaceable".
She said: “Nicky is simply irreplaceable. Not just for her huge talent but also for her sheer exuberance, enthusiasm and sense of fun. Everyone on the team loved her and none more than me.” Directors UK, the professional association of UK screen directors, also paid tribute to Nicky with a post to X, formerly Twitter.
The post read: "We were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of factual director and our member Nicky Illis. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time." It is not yet known what type of cancer Nicky was battling, or for how long for. Her family have not spoken out on the loss or shared when she passed.
