Comedian and actress Helen Lederer, known for her role in Absolutely Fabulous, is about to appear on Coronation Street. Helen joins the cast as Elspeth who catches the eye of Ken Barlow, played by William Roache. In the episode to air on Wednesday 27 March, Ken spots Elspeth during a singles cocktail night at the Chariot Square Hotel.
But Helen revealed it’s her “bold” character, Elspeth, who makes the first move. She said: “Elspeth gets Debbie to send over two drinks to Ken and Steve to get Ken’s attention. “I think bold is a very keyword now for this generation of women of a certain age who still want to live their life.” Having sent drinks over to Ken and his son-in-law Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), Elspeth is invited to join them.
Helen said: “So many people would have the fear of being rejected but Elspeth doesn’t. She takes the initiative and she is not disappointed as Ken is open to getting to know her.” While Ken is thrilled, Steve is gutted that his father-in-law has managed to hit it off with an attractive lady whilst he hasn’t met anyone. Steve continues to have a hard time as he struggles to get over Tracy Barlow’s (Kate Ford) recent affair.
Helen played Catriona in Absolutely Fabulous from 1992 to 2003 and returned again in 2012 for the show’s 20th anniversary. Despite her successful career in comedy and acting, Helen said she still gets nervous joining new shows, like Coronation Street.
