Unlike other hits to come from Blumhouse over the past decade, “The Purge” started as a simple, but clever horror franchise and morphed into a political satire that mixes over-the-top violence and imagery with a very serious message.

Just in case you didn’t read the story of the mother who tracked down the cartel kidnappers who murdered her daughter when the New York Times published it earlier this month, you’re in luck, because Variety reports that Blumhouse just won a heated bidding war for the rights to the story.

Three years ago, who would have thought that David Gordon Green would go from being the guy who directed episodes of “Red Oaks” and “Eastbound & Down,” as well as films like “Pineapple Express” and “Your Highness,” to one of the biggest names in horror.

Sure, he’s currently celebrating the recent release of his latest horror-comedy, “Freaky,” but filmmaker Christopher Landon can’t escape the “Happy Death Day” questions. After writing and directing the first two films in the Blumhouse franchise, fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the planned third film.
