As Spyglass Media Group scrambles to figure out what’s next for the “Scream” franchise, director Christopher Landon, who exited “Scream VII” last December, continues to land new projects. The latest for Landon after the creature feature “Big Bad“? Deadline reports he’ll direct “Drop,” the newest team-up between Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes.

Universal and Blumhouse aren’t ready to give up on their new “The Exorcist” trilogy just yet. Deadline reports that the studios eye horror maestro Mike Flanagan to helm their upcoming sequel “The Exorcist: Deceiver” after David Gordon Green exited the franchise in January.

Moviegoers may not remember, but back in February 2020, right before the COVID-19 pandemic took over the globe, Leigh Whannell‘s “The Invisible Man” raked at the box office. The horror remake was a mega-hit for Blumhouse and Universal, making over 20x its budget at the box office before movie theaters shuttered their doors for months just a few weeks later.

Guy Ritchie‘s London gangster caper-comedy “The Gentlemen.” Now Deadline reports McConaughey is ready for a live-action role again, and will star in “The Lost Bus.” Paul Greengrass will direct the film, with Jamie Lee Curtis co-starring.

Well, this isn’t much of a surprise given the recent box office result of 2023’s “Exorcist: Believer” movie, a reboot and legacy sequel to the original William Friedkin “Exorcist” movie from 1973 made by Blumhouse and Universal. Filmmaker David Gordon Green is exiting the franchise, the search is on for a new filmmaker, and in the interim, Universal has taken the sequel, “The Exorcist: Deceiver” sequel, off the calendar.

Where the Dark Universe failed before it even started—you know, the big shared universe with Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Angelina Jolie, etc.—Blumhouse has shown they have the Midas Touch with horror. Look at what they did, for example, with Leigh Whannell’s terrific and inventive traumatic gaslighting horror, “The Invisible Man,” starring Elisabeth Moss.

We’ve been talking about a Blumhouse remake of “Wolfman” for years now. Way back in 2020, after the massive success of Leigh Whannell’s “Invisible Man,” he was quickly snatched up by Blumhouse to take another Universal Monster and reimagine it.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that a film with a very small budget that earns over $160 million worldwide is going to get a sequel. It’s taken years to get here, but the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie we’ve all anticipated is finally here, from Blumhouse Pictures and director Emma Tammi. The film is set at an abandoned family entertainment center and stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, a security guard coping with past traumas while accepting a graveyard shift at the FEC, where he discovers that the facility’s animatronic creatures come to life and kill anyone who is on the grounds after midnight.

Alright, “Exorcist: Believer,” Universal and Blumhouse Pictures’ legacy sequel of 1973’s “The Exorcist,” directed by David Gordon Green hit theaters last weekend and the results were, well, kinda mid. Yes, it’s a legacy sequel, so much like the newest “Halloween” trilogy (also made by Green, Universal and Blumhouse), it disregards all the other sequels and essentially only takes place after the original film).

The relationship between horror production shingle Blumhouse and Prime Video seems like a big win-win for everyone. Prime Video gets content, Blumhouse gets paid, and the company, run by the canny Jason Blum, uses this deal wisely, often using it as an intelligent way to give voice to BIPOC and female filmmakers.

Can you survive five nights? Say what you will about the idea of a terrifying horror game phenomenon turned into a blood-chilling cinematic event; eye-roll all you want. And we might agree with you normally.

Blumhouse scored huge box office numbers when David Gordon Green took on a new sequel to the “Halloween” franchise back in 2018. That resulted in three hit films (though critics haven’t been too kind to at least two of those movies).

We already know that Blumhouse loves a franchise. The micro-budget horror film company is always keen to turn a successful one-off film into a long-running feature franchise.

Blumhouse had their hand in another horror hit last month with “M3GAN.” But in between that and their next premier release, David Gordon Green‘s “The Exorcist” remake, check out “Unseen,” part of Blumhouse Television‘s deal with MGM+. In “Unseen,” a gas station clerk gets an unexpected call at work from a drugged, nearly blind young woman trying to escape from her ex-boyfriend, who’s out to kill her.

Writer/Director Chris Weitz and John Cho have a history going back to the original “American Pie” film in 1999. They team up next for the horror film “They Listen,” their eleventh collaboration overall.

Over the weekend, Blumhouse and Universal released “Halloween Ends,” which earned more than $41 million at the box office. That’s a pretty solid opening for a film that sports a reported budget of only $30 million.
