AS James Bond, he was the ultimate ladies’ man.
But vintage footage shows Sir Sean Connery sharing what’s believed to be the first man-on-man kiss on British television.
The footage, from a 1960 BBC play, was believed lost for decades.
But it is now set to be shown for the first time in more than 50 years in the star’s home city of Edinburgh.
Bizarrely, the smooch is with an actor playing his character’s brother.
Film critic Jonathan Melville said: “The kiss is between him and an actor called Richard Pasco.
“That sounds quite bad but it’s not actually a sexual thing. The character believes his brother is having an affair with his wife and wants to know what makes him such a good kisser.
“So the first gay kiss on British TV still goes to EastEnders, a whole 27 years later.”
Melville has been working with the British Film Institute’s Missing Presumed Wiped project, who are bringing the play, titled Colombe, to Edinburgh. It was discovered by an American researcher in 2010.
The Filmhouse will be showing it in a double bill with a 1960s episode of Doctor Who, possibly one of the ones discovered recently that were thought to have been deleted.
There will also be extracts from Lulu’s TV show It’s Lulu, amateur film taken at The Lucky White Heather Club and footage of At Last – The
1948 Show which was a precursor to Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
Melville added: “When colour
television came in, many just assumed that no one would ever want to
watch the old black and white shows again.
“And of course, Sir Sean was just another bit-part actor in those days.”
It is hoped the screenings could become an annual event in Edinburgh and may result in more lost programmes being discovered.
