A top doctor has warned of another difficult winter ahead for the NHS, which he claims is "not sufficiently resilient" to deal with it. The health service came under extreme strain last winter across the country, with the season described as one of the worst on record for the NHS.
In Greater Manchester, hospital trusts issued regular warnings about pressure at emergency departments, while North West Ambulance Service issued pleas for people to use it only the most severe cases. The strain came as the NHS also faced huge backlogs in treatment following the pandemic, while workers also began to take industrial action.
This year is not expected to be easier. This week, bosses at Royal Bolton Hospital were already warning patients of huge pressure at the hospital's emergency department.

A record 7.6 million people are currently waiting for treatment in England, with new figures expected tomorrow (September 14). Health leaders are now meeting to examine winter preparedness plans for the months ahead.
