Popular sportswear brand The North Face is offering shoppers a huge discount to spend online - but there’s a catch. The American outdoors company is giving a 20% off promotional code to those who take a course on “racial inclusion.”
The hour-long digital initiative called ‘Allyship through the Outdoors’, aims to inspire customers “to reflect, check our privilege and play our part in creating a more equitable outdoors.”
Consisting of four modules, the programme examines the "unique challenges that people of colour face when accessing the outdoors".

The questionnaire covers topics such as “white privilege” and addresses the unique challenges faced by ethnically diverse communities in outdoor environments.
George Floyd, a black man who was murdered by a police officer in 2020 sparking huge attention to the Black Lives Matter movement, is also mentioned in a section of the course stating the incident “fostered a new awakening in the outdoors that racial inclusion and representation matters in sports like climbing, hiking, snowboarding, skiing and trail running”.
Teaming up with BeyondSport and UK-based consultancy group Mór Diversity, specialists in social impact, sustainability, and diversity, The North Face encourages those taking the course to have an “open mind” and to listen to “people’s lived experiences.”
In order to take the course you have to be an existing XPLR Pass member or sign-up to get started.
At the end of the process, you will be awarded a 20% voucher to spend on The North Face website.
