When “Happy Valley” wrapped up its second season in 2016, fans of the British police thriller were devastated that the intense series seemed to be over for good. Created by Sally Wainwright and starring Sarah Lancashire (HBO’s “Julia”) as a police officer in a hard-scrabble area of West Yorkshire, the series won the BAFTA for best drama in both seasons, and attracted a devoted audience around the world. Working in a region plagued with drugs, crime and poverty, Lancashire’s character Sergeant Catherine Cawood is a tough but empathetic cop who divides her time between solving brutal crimes and taking care of her sister, a former addict, and her grandson, whom she raised after her daughter died by suicide. Seasons 1 and 2 track her mission to bring down Tommy Lee Royce — the hardened criminal who raped her daughter and fathered her grandson, Ryan. James Norton’s nuanced performance as the violent Tommy, who still holds out hope for a relationship with his son, is the polar opposite of the crime-solving vicar he played in his next series, “Grantchester.”
‘The Marlow Murder Club’: PBS Masterpiece & UKTV Greenlight TV Adaptation From ‘Death In Paradise’ Creator

Death in Paradise creator Robert Thorogood is penning a TV adaptation of his novel The Marlow Murder Club for PBS Masterpiece and UK network UKTV.
Ghosts producer Monumental Television is behind the adaptation of the 2021 novel, which follows a retired archaeologist, played by Downton Abbey’s Samantha Bond. When the police are reluctant to believe her story, Judith finds herself forming an unlikely friendship with local dog-walker and empty-nester Suzie and unfulfilled vicar’s wife Becks as they start an investigation of their own. Eventually asked to assist with the official police investigation, headed by newly promoted Tanika, the women must piece together clues, grill suspect witnesses, and face down real danger as they work against the clock to stop the killer in their tracks.
The series will also star Jo Martin (Doctor Who), Cara Horgan (The Sandman) and Natalie Dew (Sandylands).
Thorogood is the creator of hugely successful BBC drama Death in Paradise, which airs in the U.S. on PBS and has run for 12 seasons. He is penning the screenplay for The Marlow Murder Club, with Steve Barron directing.
“After over a decade of working on Death in Paradise, I’m thrilled to be creating a brand new murder mystery series for TV,” said Thorogood. “I can’t wait for audiences to join Judith, Becks and Suzie on their adventures as they solve a series of fiendishly puzzling murders.”
PBS and BBC Studios-owned UKTV also co-produce crime thriller Miss Scarlet and the Duke, which has run for three seasons, with a fourth set to air next year.

Yossman She’s perhaps best known for her turn as David Tennant’s companion Donna in “Doctor Who” (a role she’ll reprise on screen this fall) but, for her latest project, Catherine Tate has swapped the Tardis for tiaras. Titled “Queen of Oz,” the new BBC comedy sees Tate play a disgraced British princess who is sent Down Under after screwing up one too many royal engagements. In the show, Tate plays Princess Georgiana who, after yet another public catastrophe (involving a school visit and plenty of alcohol-induced vomit), is banished to Australia. Tate says she was attracted by the “fish out of water” concept but, despite many royal-related headlines in recent years, is keen to point out that no real royals inspired Georgiana’s character. “I wasn’t thinking of anyone, because it’s nice to create something from scratch,” says the comedian, who co-wrote and stars in the series.
