To mark International Women's Day, Oldham Council are unveiling a plaque to commemorate a spot which could have been at the centre of a decision that led to the Suffrage movement.
The unveiling is happening due to Helen Walton, from Rochdale, carrying out research into radical reform. This was the movement which would eventually lead women to be given the right to vote in 1918.
Helen discovered a reference from the book 'Passages in the Life of a Radical' by Middleton born Samuel Bamford. He was a radical reformer, journalist and poet and his later work gives a brilliant window into life in Victorian Manchester.

The book states the field in Lydgate, Saddleworth, where the plaque will go, was the place of a meeting on May 4th 1818, where Bamford suggested women should get the right to vote in reformer meetings, essentially granting them equal status with the men who were present.
The book states that Bamford insisted that women be allowed to attend and vote in the meeting, with Bamford writing the women were 'mightily pleased with it'. From this, women's political unions were also formed with chairwomen, committees and other representatives and they continued to vote at following meetings.
The date of this meeting was 85 years before Emmeline Pankhurst formed the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903, which she led until its disbandment in 1918. Pankhurst is credited and remembered for being a leading women's rights activists, taking part in hunger strikes and being imprisoned in her fight for women's right to vote.
Helen and colleague Danny Brierley, from Grasscroft, helped to bring details of this meeting in Lydgate to the attention of Oldham
