Susanna Reid had a touching one-word reaction to Kate Garraway's new ITV documentary about her husband Derek Draper. Susanna said she was "moved" by the film during Good Morning Britain on Tuesday 19 March. She shared: "They absolutely upheld their marriage vows.
I feel so moved seeing Derek in that short bit of film." In the clip, viewers saw Kate and Derek together as he wrote 'Covid changed everything'. Kate asked Derek if he thought it changed everything for him, and he said yes. At the end of the clip, you can hear Kate asking: "Where's this story going to end?” Susanna talked about the power in the short video as she told GMB watchers that Kate knew people might react strongly to the documentary.
But her co-host felt it was important to let Derek speak for himself. Susanna said: "I think that's the first time we've seen how much Derek was able to express his feelings about how he wanted his story told." The documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek's Story, will show Derek's personal fight with his illness. It will also talk about the challenges faced by lots of people in the UK who are living with serious sickness and disability.
From May last year, the special documentary tells real stories of love and joy that Derek and Kate, along with their kids, experienced.
The film also sheds light on Derek's life before he got sick from coronavirus back in 2020. It'll explore his high-profile political career, his blossoming relationship with Kate, and the shift in their dynamics after Derek fell ill. Sadly, at the beginning of this year, Derek passed away after fighting long-covid for years and having a cardiac arrest at the end of 2023.
Talking about the film, Kate revealed why she and Derek decided to make the documentary.
