While promoting his upcoming Prime Video series Citadel, the 62-year-old actor revealed the one role he would never play again – even though it earned him an Oscar nomination!

“I would not play George Harvey again in The Lovely Bones, which was horrible,” Stanley told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s a wonderful movie, but it was a tough experience. Simply because of the role.”
Based on the 2002 book of the same name by Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones follows a young girl who is murdered. stanley played the serial killer who murdered the young girl along with others.
Stanley went on to admit that he had hesitations about the role from the beginning and even questioned director Peter Jackson about why he was picked to play the murderer.
“I asked Peter Jackson why he cast me in that role. I tried to get out of playing the role, which is crazy because I needed a job,” Stanley recalled. “But I was like, ‘Why do you want me?’ And he said, ‘Because you’re funny.’ And I thought, ‘OK.’ But I understand what he was saying.”
“I think what he meant was that I wouldn’t be too — not that I wouldn’t be serious about it, but that I wouldn’t be overly dramatic about it,” Stanley explained. “That I would throw it away a bit. Which is what you have to do when you’re playing somebody who’s that awful, right?”
He continued, “You can’t play into it. Then, you know, it’s over. Like, the movie’s over. You just have to play against it.”
Despite his hesitations, the role earned Stanley an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor back in 2009.
