A coroner has issued a warning following the death of a young woman whilst she was being detained at a psychiatric unit in Stockport, more than 250 miles from her home.
Lauren Bridges, 20, from Bournemouth, was a 'straight-A student' who dreamed of becoming a doctor or nurse. She had been at The Priory's Cheadle Royal Hospital for over five months when she was found unconscious in her en-suite bathroom on February 24 last year.
She was rushed to Wythenshawe Hospital with her family making the six-hour journey from Dorset to be with her. A clinical decision was made, in consultation with Lauren's mother Lindsey, and her loved ones, to end her life support and she died two days later.

Following a four-week inquest into her death at South Manchester Coroner's Court in Stockport, which concluded in September, a jury ruled she did not intend to take her own life and that her death was 'misadventure.'
The hearing was told that two months after being admitted in July 2021, Lauren was ready to be 'stepped down' to a different kind of unit, closer to home. However by the time of her death the following February, she remained sectioned there, with the distance from her family said to be a 'major factor' in the deterioration of her mental health.
The jury said her discharge was 'delayed' and that there were 'missed opportunities' by Dorset Healthcare NHS Trust, who commissioned her care at The Priory, to find her a bed nearer to home.
